As if blossoming flowers, new restaurants are ever presently opening in Eau Claire. Some via a national/regional chain link, others local and most trying to bring a new flavor or twist to the community. There is a justification for the grumbling some restaurateurs have, and visible frustration Gen Zers and younger millennials express, when it comes to a belief that the palate of the typical Eau Clarian seems content with an inexpensive, greasy burger and fries meal.  Emphasis on the INEXPENSIVE.

Well, the Hungry Italian is  a firm believer that sophistication and feeling naughty with guilty pleasures coexist as if cheese and potatoes baking in a casserole dish. In the same evening, one can be entertained by a suit & tie musical performance at the Pablo and then laugh during drinks later as their date plays the butt whistle and stinks up the joint.

The Hungry Italian is quick to trumpet that VALUE is very important and defend many new restaurant’s prices. At the same time, Eau Claire’s culinary identity (for better or worse) is burger and fries served at tiny bars and to be a true community member one must partake.   Sit down, smile, chew, smile some more  and in the end, realize that “inexpensive” meal is a little more tiresome for the wallet than sentimentalist memories perhaps permitted.

With that in mind, Court-n-House on West Grand welcomed the shadow of the Hungry Italian. This place is well known. A favorite of downtown workers and those who work/visit the County Government buildings, the place is a quintessential Eau Claire throwback. The place is a time warp into the 1970s with dark décor of wood on the walls.  Neon lights, windows and a surprising amount of televisions, not to mention a steady stream of customers.  Close your eyes and open them and instantly around you may find people talking about their latest shift at Uniroyal, Ken Anderson’s Blugolds and if downtown will survive London Square. The ghost and consciousness of decades of customers persist.

Say what you will about the “inexpensiveness” of a meal at a place such as this. If it wasn’t good, no matter how cheap Eau Clarians are traditionally, the place wouldn’t have existed for so long.

There are sandwiches, and regulars will defend to the death that the fish fry is the best in town, but come here for the burger and fries (a little extra).  Upon entering, there was a seat right at the bar which felt right and within 30 seconds my order was placed.  Shortly thereafter, my plate arrived with a glistening burger and heaping amount of thick fries.  Each bite, a gluttonous journey to food hell and back with a grin on my face.  The burger tastes as if it’d been frozen but that is just for food snobs and something you hear chefs bark about. More importantly, it’s greasy, buttery and yummy. Likely an 80/20 grind, the type of grind you’d never buy at the store as the label scares you like a swarm of hornets but here you give no second thought because it’s out of sight.   The fries are standard, but that’s not a bad thing.  They taste like French fries (again, don’t settle for the chips).

Here is the kicker, people go to places such as this because it’s “cheap” but the final bill here was in line with that of other places.  Now one can save money by not ordering a drink or fries but then your overall value/quality goes down. In the end, the prices here are in line with those other places we deem “expensive” and “lavish”.  Remember, all these places get their food from suppliers and in some cases the same ones.

However, Court-n-House is just flat out good.  Don’t overthink it and also don’t oversell it.  This is a great spot for lunch or a casual quick dinner.
