ENTREE

Our instinct is to delay gratification which is why we’ll start with a hastily put together salad instead of the creamy mac-n-cheese at a Mother’s Day buffet.

However, time is short and we all only have so many breaths thus not everything needs to be played slowly.  Go for it and be honest.  Lean in for the kiss, ask for the raise and in the case of this review let’s cut straight to it.

Johnny’s is easily the Hungry Italian’s favorite pie in the Chippewa Valley. It is distinctive with a true “New York Style” complete with foldable crust and enough grease dripping off each slice to fill Half Moon Lake twice over.  The shop also offers glutenous stuffed pizzas for when “death by pizza” actually sounds like a good idea.  These stomach bomb, artery cloggers will knock you out for a day but you’ll be smiling the entire time.

On this particular evening the Hungry Italian and the family enjoyed a few options.  Two pizzas were ordered (they sell 18-inches or slices) with one pepperoni and the other a green olive/jalapeno flavor.  Along with that, an order of breadsticks and a green olive calzone.

We’ll start with the breadsticks.  They are large, about 1x6 inches and are very doughy.  While tasty, resist the urge to order them as they’re not worth it.  Again, they are good but save your stomach space for the main entrees.

The pizza is simply unmatched in the area.  A slightly charred crust, topped with mildly sweet and savory sauce blanketed by greasy cheese.  The pepperoni has a kick to it while the veggie toppings are crisp and fresh.

What about the calzone?  Again it’s a winner with an explosion of pizza cheese and ricotta oozing out the center of a pillow pocket.

The only knock on the place is price which the Hungry Italian knows scares off more than a few.  However, the value is most definitely there.

Johnny’s is located in the Golf Road plaza and while it has a small dining area, delivery and carryout is available via apps and telephone.  Even before the pandemic, carryout/delivery feels like the better option with Johnny’s and that is okay as these types of food stuffs travel very well.

SECOND HELPING

Damn, we’d be eating another Johnny’s pizza right now if possible.
